From The Atlantic:
Recall that the White House pointedly refused to appoint Becker during the last recess but reserved the right to do so in the future. It was a warning aimed at Republicans who had held up the Becker nod for a year. (Becker is widely seen as being favorable to labor's interests, having been a lawyer for the SEIU and AFL-CIO unions.) Now that Obama has taken off the gloves, gotten health care reform passed, and hasn't yet put them back on, Becker's appointment looks likely. Here's what Katie Packer of the Workforce Fairness Institute wrote about Becker last month:
Needless to say, Becker is a chief advocate for the job-killing Employee 'Forced Choice Act (EFCA). He would say and do just about anything to have the opportunity to impose through NLRB action some of the worst components of EFCA, like the elimination of the secret ballot in organizing elections and allowing government arbitrators to mandate contract terms on employers and employees alike without their consent. The result of these actions would be as many as 600,000 lost jobs with small businesses across the country closing their doors or moving overseas. The lynch-pin of EFCA is card check, which would replace the secret ballot part of the organizing process with a free-to-peek petition drive. How comfortable would you feel if your pro-union supervisor handed you a card chek petition on the day before payday?
Card check would be especially toxic for small business--and remember, it is they (not the federal government) who creates most of our new jobs. Card check means higher unemployment.
Oh...once again I have to ask: What happened to President Obama's laser-focus on jobs?
If Becker does get his recess appointment, it means that Obama is in fact laser-focused on killing jobs.
Congress is scheduled to go on its Easter recess next week.
