Half Dome and El Capitan are the best-known mountains in Yosemite, and Californians thought enough of Half Dome to include it on the back of its commemorative quarter, along with John Muir and a California Condor.
There isn't another half to the mountain, the granite ridge exists the way nature intended.
Once said to be unclimbable, George Anderson proved the experts wrong in 1875. Today it's a popular spot for experienced rock climbers, but it's a dangerous endeavor. More than 60 climbers have died on Half Dome or on the trail leading up to it, the most recent fatality occurred in June.
Yosemite can be a crowded place, and in its own way, so can Half Dome. Saturday is the busiest day of the week, sometimes 70 climbers ascend the mountain.
The elevation of Half Dome is 8,836 feet, it arises 4,737 feet from the Yosemite Valley.
