The modest path pictured here is the Appalachian Trail, which runs from Maine to Georgia; it was built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps. The trail is 2,175 miles long, and 9,000 people have reported walking walking the entire length.
The part of the trail pictured is in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, one of the more rugged segments of the trail. The highest point of elevation for the trail is near this spot.
