Rep. Joe Walsh of Illlinois, who boasts that he is a "Tea Party conservative first...and a Republican second," was emotional and animated in front a packed house of 350 at a town hall meeting this afternoon in northwest suburban Elk Grove Village.
I've attended enough of these meetings to know that it's best to start with the speaker's conclusion--the ideas of the meeting our usually summarized nicely at the end of it. So it was with Walsh today.
He reprised the theme of being "prepared to go to jail" to defend freedom in our country, which was the heart of a speech he made in March.
"The subject of this town hall was 'What are you prepared to do?,'" Walsh summarized to the audience.
"But I think when you say--when you ask--are you prepared to go to jail, we understand what that means," Walsh said. "You're a small business owner who is trying to make a go of it, make a living, and provide for your family, and you have a government--especially if you live in Illinois--which is taxing and regulating you out of existence. Are you prepared to go to jail to defend your right to keep your money and to make a prosperous life for yourself?"
Cries of 'Yes' followed.
He asked the same questions of mothers, doctors, and religious believers.
As for the turnout for the town hall, Walsh mused, "I hope, I really hope this means that the sleeping giant has woken up again."
I hope so too.
In regards to the the fall elections, Walsh said, "I think if we don't get November right, I don't think we'll ever recover."
He quickly added, "Your country that you love is going through a revolution to save its very soul."
As for the tempestuous atmosphere in Washington, "If you're tired of us fighting in Washington..."
"Tough," he added after a pause.
In a statement about the town hall, Walsh said,
While I was extremely pleased with the turnout of concerned citizens, I am disappointed my opponent has yet to come out to discuss this ruling with the good folks of the 8th district. She has made it clear she supports the president's tax on the nearly 50 million uninsured Americans and is on the record to say it should have gone further by creating a single-payer government run health care system.
White House Chief-of-Staff Jack Lew struggled...and struggled...to explain on Fox News Sunday that the individual mandate of ObamaCare is not a tax--even though the Supreme Court said it is.
Other Sunday morning highlights include Nancy Pelosi almost calling it, correctly of course, a tax.
Maryland's Democratic governor. Martin O'Malley, also was twisting in the wind on the tax portion of ObamaCare.
The wife of the former head of one of the nation's largest union locals has pleaded guilty to an income tax charge in connection with more than $540,000 she received in consulting payments from the Los Angeles-based labor organization.
As part of a deal with the U.S. attorney's office here, Pilar Planells pleaded guilty earlier this month to a misdemeanor count of failure to file a 2008 tax return for the money that Local 6434 of the Service Employees International Union paid to a firm she founded. Planells is expected to be sentenced to three years' probation next month, according to court records.
She must also pay about $130,000 in back taxes, interest and penalties, records show. The case against Planells grew out of Times reports in 2008 that focused on the financial dealings of her husband, Tyrone Freeman, who was later ousted as Local 6434 president. The federal investigation of Freeman is continuing, officials said Friday.

The Times reported that Local 6434 and a related charity paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to Planells' firm, Lotus Seven Productions, and her mother's day-care service. Under Freeman's direction, the local spent similar sums at a golfing resort, expensive restaurants and a Beverly Hills cigar lounge, according to records and interviews.
Fallout from The Times' reports spread through the SEIU and cost other union officials their jobs. Still pending is a lawsuit the union filed against Freeman and Planells that seeks to recover more than $1.1 million allegedly pilfered. The money allegedly financed Freeman's lifestyle of $175 glasses of cognac, $250 bottles of wine and a $3,400 trip to the NFL Pro Bowl in Hawaii. At the time, Local 6434's members were paid about $9 an hour.
The workers represented by Local 6434 are described as "low wage" by the paper.
