My good friend Victor Maggio brings back his Chicago's Most Violent Neighborhoods series. Here is #11, the Southwest Side's Little Village neighborhood.
Many years ago my father was the director of the Little Village Community Council, which still exists. Maggio has a family connection to this area too.
Gangs of course are the heart of the neighborhood's troubles. Little Village is mostly Hispanic now, but the first Mexican-American gang was formed for self defense in response to white greaser gang attacks in the early 1960s.
My dad took me to his workplace in Little Village when I was eight years-old or so. It was so quiet.
Not anymore.
