Detroit receives UNESCO 'City of Design' designation

Abandoned Detroit home
Did the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization judges actually visit Detroit? If so, did they venture beyond downtown?

From MLive:
Detroit was awarded with UNESCO's "City of Design" designation, the first and only U.S city to do so.

"Detroit will be joining 47 cities from 33 countries as new members of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network, comprised of cities that represent a strong legacy in one of seven creative fields, from Gastronomy and Literature to Design," according to Detroit Creative Corridor Center, or DC3, which started the application process in Spring 2015.
