(Photos) Independence Grove in October

Perhaps the crown jewel of the Lake County Forest Preserve District is Independence Grove in Libertyville. I was there last Thursday for a run.

The entrance on Buckley.

Mrs.Marathon Pundit snapped this photograph.

The fall colors are just starting to emerge in northern Illinois.

Those are sumacs in the foreground, the only tree native to each state in the continental United States. They turn a brilliant red each fall.

That bridge connects runners and cyclists to the Des Plaines River Tail.

The path goes ever on and on.

Through sugar maples...

...and bur oaks.

And another clearing.
