Although its foliage looks thistle-like, the so-called Globe Thistle, a European invader, is actually a member of the aster family.
This blue-purple blossomed plant was photographed in Des Plaines along the banks of the Des Plaines River across from Campground Road Woods near Oakton Avenue.
The flowers look like exotic balls. Or Christmas ornaments.
