Global warming news: Great Lakes now 87 percent covered in ice

Lake Michigan last month
What the world--but particularly the Upper Midwest and southern Canada--needs right now is more greenhouse gases to prevent the complete freezing over of the Great Lakes.

The Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory (GLERL) is reporting that the Great Lakes are now 87.3 percent covered in ice. Just a week ago they were only 77 percent iced over.

Superior, Huron, and Erie are almost completely frozen, Michigan is 80 covered in ice, while Lake Ontario is the laggard--it's only 32 percent on the rocks.

The record for Great Lakes ice cover is 94.7 percent, and that level could be surpassed next week.
