One of the many wondrous things about our capitalist system is the ability of individuals or businesses to purchase other businesses. New owners with fresh ideas then clear out the dead wood and try--with no guarantee of success--to turn things around.
It's been speculated that conservative businessmen Charles and David Koch may want to purchase some or all of the Tribune Company, which recently emerged from bankruptcy. The firm owns eight newspapers, including the Los Angeles Times and the Chicago Tribune, as well as many TV and radio stations.
Big Labor hates the Koch brothers because of their conservative views. And they don't want them to own the LA Times and the other Tribune papers because they might try to influence their editorial board. Before the 'community organizer' era of political discourse, folks would just shrug their shoulders and say, "I'm not going cancel my subscription" and move on.
However, the good old days are over now and have been for some time. So the The Los Angeles County Federation of Labor will hold a protest on Tuesday at Oaktree Capital Management, which the AFL-CIO blog says "has a significant ownership stake in the Tribune Co., along with managing a number of public employee and union pension funds."
The union goons appear to be simply attacking Charles and David Koch. But what they are really doing is attacking capitalism.
