Rezko will send his regrets: Obama to hold birthday fundraiser at his Chicago mansion

Before Mitt Romney purchased his suburban Boston home, he did not conduct a walk-through of it with a man who was under federal investigation. Barack Obama, on the other hand, did just that in 2005. The now-imprisoned Tony Rezko accompanied him before signing on the dotted line to buy his South Side Chicago mansion. Simultaneous to the closing, Rezko's wife, Rita, bought the southern end of the property, "the Rezko lot," in a deal never fully-explained by the Obamas or the Rezkos. My guess is that the Obamas couldn't afford the home and the crony capitalist, who was Obama's first political sponsor, did so in order to continue his cultivation of the then-US senator.

Why am I bringing this up?

Because for the second consecutive year, Obama will celebrate his birthday with a fundraiser in Chicago. Only this time the party will take place at that mansion adjacent to the Rezko lot.

Obama's birthday, which he has not declared a federal holiday by issuing an executive order--yet--is August 4.

Rezko, who hosted a glitzy fundraiser for Obama in 2003 at his mansion, won't be able to break away from his cell at the Federal Correctional Institute in Pekin, Illinois to attend what will surely be the premier South Side social engagement of 2012.

When mainstream reporters, who are obsessed with Romney's dealings at Bain Capital, file their stories about the birthday fundraiser, they may want to include some details on the deal that went down six years after Romney left Bain to run the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics.
