Illinois Policy Institute: Nearly half of state's public school teachers contribute nothing to their pensions

My good friends at the Illinois Policy Institute just released a study that shows nearly half of our state's public school teachers, despite union claims, contribute nothing to their retirement funds. Instead, the IPI writes, the 9 percent employee portion is "picked up" by school districts. While in some other districts, a portion of that requirement is covered. In both cases, taxpayers such as myself are being fleeced. In 2009-10, that perk cost taxpayers $400 million.

The practice is hardly new, but the good old days are over now and have been for several years. Pay up, teachers. And wise up, school boards.

Meanwhile, Cook County taxpayers are receiving their property tax bills and many of them are angry.
