Decades ago Captain America was a respectable patriotic super hero, but as my friend Warner Todd Huston learned last year, he went from combatting Nazis to fighting a racist and sexist Tea Party group. I've been to a bunch of Tea Party rallies--and the movement is not racist or sexist. Marvel, which owns the Captain American brand, quickly apologized.
Later this month the movie Captain America: The First Avenger will be released in the United States. But as part of the distribution agreement of Paramount Pictures and Marvel studios, other countries have the option of dropping Captain America from the title. Three nations, Russia, North Korea, and surprisingly, Ukraine, accepted the offer.
