Mark Kirk statement on defeat of earmark bill

America's newest senator, Mark Kirk (R-IL), just released the following statement in regards to the defeat of Harry Reid's earmark bill:

Economic conservatives won tonight with the collapse of the Omnibus appropriations spending bill. A growing number of Americans opposed it. Your voice was heard.

Senator Reid announced to the Senate that we would not move forward with a 1,924-page, $1.1 trillion bill containing 6,600 earmarks. Change is coming to Washington as the Congress moves forward with a much less expensive and responsible short-term Continuing Resolution that will cost less, allowing essential government functions to continue until the newly elected Senators and Congressmen take office January 5th. I especially want to thank the 12 new GOP Senators-elect that joined me this afternoon in opposing this bill.

The American people won.
