IL 9: New poll shows Schakowsky under 50 percent

Despite her extreme left-wing views, Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) has coasted to victory in every general election--because she faced anemic Republican opponents. But Joel Pollak gives voters to the right of Nancy Pelosi real hope Schakowsky will be sent packing.

Pollak is still the underdog--but the election is not today. From a Pollak campaign press release:

NILES, IL—October 14: The Pollak for Congress campaign has released poll data showing that Democrat incumbent Jan Schakowsky has fallen to 48%, while Republican challenger Joel Pollak is gaining ground at 30%.

Most telling, only 44% of voters say that Schakowsky deserves to be re-elected, while 42% say that it is time to give a new person a chance. Among those who feel most strongly, only 37% say that Schakowsky deserves to be re-elected, while 38% say it is time to give a new person a chance.

"We are gaining momentum as voters learn more about the contrast between Joel's fresh ideas and Jan Schakowsk'’s extreme record," said Ashley Kain, campaign manager. "Any incumbent polling under 50% in this political climate is extremely vulnerable."

The results indicate that the race is tightening, given that Schakowsky has never before received less than 70% of the vote, and recently claimed to be polling near 60%.

The poll was conducted by Magellan Data and Mapping Strategies, which conducted an autodial survey of 945 likely voters in the 9th congressional district on October 12. The margin of error is +/- 3%.
