There were a lot of new jobs created last month--but almost all of them were temporary government positions, mostly with the Census. Yes, the unemployment rate went down a little bit--to 9.7 percent. But Wall Street is responding with a shriek, as I write this post, the Dow Jones Industrial Average is down two percent. Ouch. Meanwhile, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) had this to say about the May unemployment figures:

LOUISVILLE - U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell made the following statement Friday regarding weaker-than-expected job creation:
The two things that are growing fastest in this Democrat economy are the size of the federal government and the crushing burden of the national debt. Americans are doing everything possible to work harder, produce more, and live with less, while Washington is saddling them with even more government and insurmountable debt for their efforts. When America truly begins creating jobs that help our economy grow, it will be despite our government, not because of it. Although Americans appreciate a job of any kind these days, temporary government Census jobs are not the kind of employment that will help kick-start and sustain our economy.
