SCOTUS Justice John Paul Stevens to retire

Chicago native John Paul Stevens, 89, a Gerald Ford appointee to the US Supreme Court, will retire at the end of the court's term this summer

Although he was appointed by a Republican president, he was a fixture of the court's liberal wing.

Last summer another Republican-appointed justice sided with the liberal bloc, David Souter, retired. His seat was filled by an arguably even more-liberal Sonia Sotomayor.
