Chicago News Bench exclusive: Scott Lee Cohen to run for governor

Scott Lee Cohen, the pawnbroker-turned politician who was the surprise winner of the Democratic primary for lieutenant governor, will run for the top spot this fall. Yes, that means governor. Tom Mannis of the Chicago News Bench has the exclusive story.

Cohen spent $2 million of his own money to run a unique campaign for the otherwise overlooked office. He held several job fairs which got him attention, and more importantly, votes. But an assault arrest involving his former girlfriend, a prostitute, and his admission of steroid use forced him resign the Democratic ticket.

Pat Quinn, who was Rod Blagojevich's lieutenant governor, faces an uphill battle to win a full term. He can't be pleased. Not that Cohen will get a lot of votes, but Quinn needs every vote he can get.

This election is Quinn's to lose. I may think that Cohen should have stayed out of this race, but I won't be upset if Quinn lost enough votes to lose. We need someone else in office right now. Not sure Quinn is what we need with the situation Illinois is in.
