Good friend-of-the-blog Pat Hickey writes about a Chicago Civil War hero, Col. James A. Mulligan, commander of the 23rd Illinois Infantry, who died from the wounds he received in the 1864 Battle of Winchester.
A few months later, Joseph Henry Ruberry, my great-grandfather, joined the the 23rd Illinois, which was also known as "the Irish Brigade." In 1865 the regiment served in the decisive Petersburg and Appomattox campaigns.
