Evergreen and white

Coniferous trees are rare in northern Illinois, suburban lawns and office campuses excepted. Although eastern red cedars are the only naturally occurring evergreens I see around my home.

This patch of woods in Northfield, seven miles north of Morton Grove, has a smattering of cedars; I enjoy running past here because it reminds me of northern Wisconsin.

I didn't get close enough to the tall evergreen in the background to determine type of tree it was; it's certainly not a cedar, but it could be a fir. It was likely planted by a farmer many decades ago.

About 100 miles west of Chicago, you will find Illinois' last natural stand of white pines, in the appropriately named White Pines Forest State Park.
