Al Haig is gone, meanwhile Argentina seeking UN help over Falklands claim

Isn't it ironic? A few days after the death of Alexander Haig, Argentina is pressing its claim to the Falkland Islands, which it calls the Malvinas.

Haig, serving as Ronald Reagan's secretary of state, used shuttle diplomacy in an attempt to prevent war between Great Britain and Argentina over the south Atlantic islands. Haig failed to do that, and he soon was an ex-secretary of state, although his departure was due to his feuding with other Reagan cabinet members and his "I'm in charge" comment after the assassination attempt on the Gipper.

According to London's Telegraph, Argentina plans to ask the United Nations to get involved, which in the short term is a complete waste of time--Britain has veto power at the UN.

But over time, I guess, the Argentines hope public opinion will force the Brits to cave in.

Oil drilling has begun in the waters surrounding the Falklands. The wool from the Falklands can't be that enticing, right?
