Will this ever end? Durbin says Burris resolution near

Man, oh man...the Rod Blagojevich-fueled Roland Burris saga keeps going on.

After Blago's arrest for attempting to sell Barack Obama's Senate seat, Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) called for a special election so there would be no taint to the president-elect's successor as Illinois' junior senator.

But Durbin changed his mind. That's because it occurred to the Springfield Democrat, after being nudged by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, that a Republican had a decent shot of capturing the seat in a spring election.

It's a real mess...created by a Democratic governor, and made worse by other Democrats. Don't forget, each Democratic senator of the 110th Congress signed a letter that they wouldn't seat any one the gangster-governor appointed.

Senate Democratic leaders and their staff in Washington are reviewing newly submitted paperwork on behalf of Gov. Rod Blagojevich's Senate appointee, Roland Burris, and Sen. Dick Durbin said a resolution to the controversy could come before Illinois lawmakers finish Blagojevich's impeachment trial.

In the latest twist among Senate Democrats, Durbin told CBS's "Face the Nation" that "point blank" the strategy was not to play a stall game and wait for Blagojevich to be removed from office so that Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn could name a senator. Blagojevich's trial is expected to take weeks.

"To wait until Gov. Blagojevich is removed could be a matter of weeks," Durbin said. "I think Roland Burris' future and fate will be decided before then."

Voters won't forget who's to blame for this fiasco.
