On the Midwestern Presidential Pathway

Blogging from West Branch, Iowa.

If West Branch, Iowa rings a bell with you, that's because this small town is the birthplace of President Herbert Hoover.

Hoover is of course the man who was our nation's leader when the Great Depression began, so he's a hot commodity now.

Although I'm sure if he was still with us, he'd prefer to be left alone.

The trip so far: Our first stop of consequence was in Galena, Illinois, a real gem of a town, best known to history buffs because it was where Ulysses S. Grant lived when the Civil War broke out.

Little Marathon Pundit is along for the ride, she described Galena as "flavorful." Interesting word choice, but she said that after eating at a Chicago-style pizza restaurant. Imagine that? We drove 150 miles just to have Chicago-style pizza.

From Galena we entered Iowa at Dubuque. From there we drove on several byways, through a difficult mix of conditions. Rain, fog, and darkness. So far it's just rain, but freezing rain is forecasted for tonight.

Now it's time to check out what food delicacies await us in West Branch.

The photograph was taken outside of Peosta, Iowa.

See the fog?

Oh, did you know that one year ago, Barack Obama won the Iowa Democratic Caucuses? Which is why this liberal blogger is calling today "Iowa Day."

I have been on Rt 20 many times, love the drive west of Freeport. Never knew it was US Grant Highway though.

Now that you are in Iowa, how about some reports on the price of gas there. When I was there during the summer it was a good buck and a quarter less than in Illinois.

I enjoyed the photo. It's nice to see that at least one windmill is still standing in Iowa.

I paid a $1.57 near Cedar Rapids last night.

I saw a few other windmills, this is the only one I got up close.
