The red-hot Chicago White Sox punished, again, the Minnesota Twins to win their sixth straight game.
The only reason the White Sox started June in first place was solid pitching--the South Siders' bats have performed poorly for the most part. After dropping three of four to the surpising Tampa Bay Rays last weekend, Sox manager Ozzie Guillen went nuclear and unleashed a tirade against his hitters. A couple of days later, brain-damaged Chicago Sun-Times columnist Jay Mariotti called for Guillen's firing.
But since then, the Sox have knocked the cover off everything thrown at them. For instance, let's look at the weekend series against the Twins: For the first time in eight years the White Sox have scored 10 or more runs in three straight games, and for the first time since 1932, the South Siders have popped 15 hits in three consecutive contests.
I'm looking forward to Jay Mariotti's next column.
The White Sox now lead the AL Central by 5 1/2 games.
CORRECTION: Technically the White Sox did sweep the Twins, but the two teams play tomorrow afternoon, a game that was not on the schedule when it was drawn up. It's a make-up game from April.
UPDATE June 9: Okay, the White Sox finally swept the Twins, winning 7-5. Sox centerfielder Nick Swisher, for the sixth time in his career, hit a home run from both sides of the plate.
