D-Day 64 years later

Third Wave Dave has a tribute on his blog to the brave soldiers who landed on the beaches of Normandy on this day 64 years ago.

He also writes about a man who fought in the Pacific, Jack Lucas, who won the Congressional Medal of Honor at age 17. Lucas passed away yesterday. Rest in peace.

And since the summer travel season has arrived, if you're anywhere near Abilene, Kansas--which is just off Interstate 70, by the way, and you want to learn more about D-Day, I strongly recommend the Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Museum.

UPDATE 12:50PM CDT: I was unaware of the existance of the D-Day Memorial in Lynchburg, Virginia, but Progressive Thinker has pictures.

If you haven't visited the 1st Division Museum in Wheaton, you should. They have a fantastic re-creation of the Omaho Beach landing. The exhibit is very realistic, according to a family friend who had piloted landing crafts that day. The experience brought him to tears and also prompted him to bring his whole family back to experience it.

The whole museum is fantastic and they run fabulous public programs. In addition to the military museum, the grounds are beautiful. http://firstdivisionmuseum.org/
