Today is the day we remember the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Pictured is Vicksburg National Military Cemetery in Mississippi. It's the final resting place of almost 17,000 Union soldiers, most of whom are unidentified. Most of the Confederate dead are buried in Vicksburg's Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Like the Shiloh National Cemetery in Tennessee, veterans from other conflicts are interred at Vicksburg, although the last burial at Vicksburg took place in 1961. In the background is the Yazoo Diversion Canal, the Mississippi River was there during the 1863 Battle of Vicksburg, the river changed its course in 1876.
On the right is are some gravestones from Shiloh National Cemetery.
Have an enjoyable Memorial Day, but remember our veterans today as well.
