Lawyers for Antoin "Tony" Rezko filed notice Monday that they will appeal a judge's decision late last month to jail the politically connected businessman before his March trial on fraud charges.
U.S. District Judge Amy St. Eve ordered Rezko into custody after prosecutors raised questions about a $3.5 million payment he received through Lebanon from an Iraqi-born billionaire. Prosecutors said some of the money went to Rezko friends and relatives who had put up properties in 2006 to secure his release, reducing their financial risk if he fled before trial.
Jury selection for the Rezko trial begins March 3, and the trial is expected to last three months. Which means plenty of headaches for his onetime friend Barack Obama--there will be Rezko news every weekday, and some weekends.
