Besides the contest I blogged about in the below post, there is another interesting local election--that of Cook County State's Attorney.
Several Democratic candidates have entered the race to succeed Dick Devine, who is retiring. Tony Peraica is running unopposed in the Republican Primary.
The winner of the race will be the chief prosecutor in the nation's second largest county. I'm urging all of my Democratic friends to vote for Anita Alvarez. If Alvarez, currenty the county's third ranking prosecutor, wins on Tuesday, I will be voting for her in the general election.
A lifetime Chicago area resident who hails from the working class Pilsen neighborhood, she's a tough nuts-and-bolts prosector who has been with the State's Attorney's office for 22 years. Since 2001, Anita has served as the Chief of the Special Prosecutions Bureau of which consists of the Arson Unit, Organized Crime/Cold Case Unit, Auto Theft Unit, Public Corruption and Financial Crimes Unit, Gang Crimes Unit, and the Professional Standards Unit.
Alvarez was the lead attorney in prosecuting one of the most notorious crimes ever to be committed in Cook County, a jurisdiction with no shortage of them, the Girl X case.
Alvarez' husband, Dr. Jim Gomez, is one of my best friends, and I count Alvarez, a mother of four children, including twin girls the same age as Little Marathon Pundit, as a friend as well.
Both Jim and Anita are marathon runners, and Alvarez is the Cook County's best bet in the long run.
Select candidate 57 on the Democratic ballot, Anita Alvarez, on Super Tuesday.
