But I am also someone who respects laws. Flor Crisostomo entered the country illegally, and is now facing deportation. However, Chicago's Adalberto United Methodist Church, which gained notoriey for granting sanctuary (which has no legal standing here, despite the cultural heritage of Victor Hugo's "Hunchback of Notre Dame,") to another illegal immigrant, the since deported Elvira Arellano, will be taking in Crisostomo as a boarder.
From the Daily Herald:
Activists from the church and the Chicago immigration rights group Centro Sin Fronteras claim that economic situations have deteriorated in Mexico because of NAFTA and other U.S. policies, creating dire situations that cause illegal immigration.
Probably not.
As I wrote several months ago, the best way to control illegal immigration is to have a prosperous Mexico as a neighbor. After she was deported, I suggested that Arellano work to improve the political situation in Mexico, and to work to toss out the crooks that run the place. Crisostomo should do the same.
As for the Adalberto United Methodist Church, are they breaking any laws?
Crisostomo had this to say:
I'm going to stay here and fight for my people.
But she said it in Spanish.
