Rudolph didn't save the day this time, but community pressure, as well as a postings on Little Green Footballs and the Drudge Report, sent the message of "Enough!" to the educrats of School District 122.
The administrators of Ridgeland School in the district made a move, which they're denying now, to rename Christmas "Winter Festival" and Halloween "Fall Festival" and then been the celebrations of each to satisfy the complaint on one Muslim parent. The ban would've carried over to the other four schools in the district.
Last night, the District 122 school board held an emergency meeting.
As the Chicago "Free Registration Required" Tribune reports, local resident Bryan Schapiro phrased things well:
For a number of years now I've seen something change every year because it goes against Muslim beliefs, Traditions that have been beloved by children in America for centuries are now being taken away little by little because the Muslims want the school day, menu and social traditions tailored to their needs.
The good news is that Christmas and Halloween are back in the school district--at least for now. Ramadan will be observed too.
Halloween, sorry Wiccans, has always been a secular holiday in this country. The religous tone of Christmas, to the chagrin of many, has been lessened over the years. To see what I'm talking about, think of the holiday classic Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.
