White Sox pitcher Buehrle finally wins 100th game

On April 18 Chicago White Sox lefty Mark Buehrle pitched a no-hitter, for his 98th career win. Five days later he won his 99th. So you think he'd quickly pick up his 100th, right? Wrong.

It took six weeks--and eight tries--but Mark Buehrle finally won his 100th game, as the South Siders defeated the Houston Astros 6-3.

Buehrle joins an elite crew of pitchers who have won their first 100 games in a White Sox uniform. Ed Walsh, Ted Lyons, and Red Faber, are in the Baseball Hall of Fame. Joel Horlen is the fourth, and until Buehrle threw his April no-hitter, Horlen was the last Sox pitcher to throw one on Chicago's South Side.

Billy Pierce, who started his career with the Detroit Tigers, won 186 games for the White Sox. Many feel Pierce belongs in Cooperstown too.

The White Sox are having a tough year, and their bullpen, plagued by injuries, almost gave today's game away by giving up three consecutive walks. Overworked Sox closer Bobby Jenks, who blew a save yesterday, was brought in with the bases loaded and saved the game for Buehrle.

In a postgame interview, Buehrle said he wants to "get to 200 wins soon." He's eligible for free agency after this season; let's hope he accomplishes that milestone in White Sox pinstripes.
