Prophetstown's veterans mural

Prophetstown's veterans mural
In the buildup to the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, I've decided to feature sites I encountered during my June Ronald Reagan Trail trip. Prophetstown was named for Wa-Bo-Kie-Shiek, "the Prophet," who was an advisor to Sauk Chief Black Hawk.

"P-Town" is not a Reagan Trail stop, but it is in Whiteside County, as is Tampico, where "Dutch" was born in 1911.

Students from Prophetstown High School have painted several murals in the village's downtown, the most recent of which is a wall painting centered around a World War I memorial pillar that stood in the center of town. It was torn down in the 1950s because it was deemed a traffic hazard. Veterans from both world wars are honored in the mural.

Prophetstown was named "the Most Arts Friendly Small Town in Illinois" by the Illinois Arts Alliance in 2005. The veterans mural is the town's most recent, it was painted in 2009.
