Michigan Dem on health care for end of life: "We have to decide how we're gonna advocate those resources"

Rep. Bart Stupak (D-MI) gained the ire of millions of Americans--and many of his constituents--when he voted for ObamaCare in exchange for a flimsy executive order banning federal funding for abortion. Facing an uncertain political future, Stupak chose to retire rather than run for reelection.

Gary McDowell is the Democratic nominee to succeed Stupak in the sprawling First Congressional District, which includes the state's upper peninsula and the northern third of its lower one.

McDowell was caught on video discussing what's called an "inconvenient truth." Regarding health care for "end of life," McDowell says, "We have to decide how we're gonna advocate those resources."

Dr. Dan Benishek is the Republican nominee in the First, he favors repealing ObamaCare.

A McDowell poll has Benishek leading 41-38 percent, with conservative third party candidate Glenn Wilson getting 12 percent. RealClearPolitics lists this race as "Leans Republican."

This is another race that one year ago no one saw as a Republican pick-up. But northern Michiganders have a history of voting Democratic, despite their socially-conservative values.
