Wade: "Did you lend any money to anybody who was controlling a nationwide prostitution ring?"
Giannoulias: "No, come on guys."
Giannoulias, a Chicago Democrat running for the US Senate, used his banking credentials gained while working at his family-owned bank to begin a career in politics. The bank failed in April.
From the Mark Kirk for Senate campaign:
FACT: Earlier this year, Chicago Tribune columnist John Kass wrote about Giannoulias' attempt to put to rest "nagging questions about the bank and loans he approved for some earthy types, including Michael 'Jaws' Giorango, the convicted Outfit bookie and protector of a national prostitution circuit." (John Kass, Chicago Tribune, 3/4/10)Vote for Giannoulias and no one gets hurt.
FACT: Giannoulias told the Chicago Tribune he once discussed Giorango’s criminal past with him. (David Jackson, "Giannoulias Speaks Up On Loans," Chicago Tribune, 4/27/06)
FACT: Giannoulias said he traveled to Miami to inspect property the bank had financed for Giorango and met with him there. Giannoulias declined to provide details of that meeting. ("Giannoulias 'Embarrassed' By Remarks About Convicted Felon,” Chicago Tribune, 4/27/06)
FACT: Between 1999 and 2005, Broadway Bank extended at least five separate loans and lines of credit to Michael Giorango personally, and at least nine additional loans and lines of credit to ventures he co-owned with Demitri Stavropoulos, totaling $39,980,000. Loans and lines of credit extended to Giorango and his companies while Alexi Giannoulias was Vice President and Senior Loan Officer of Broadway Bank total $26,080,000.
Because of former Rod Blagojevich, Illinois is already a national laughing stock. When will voters in this state stop adding to the laugh track?
