As bad as things are in Illinois, it always seems to get worse. A recent Harris poll of business leaders found that Illinois has the sixth-worst lawsuit climate in the country.
Perhaps state politicians are looking to "winning" the title of worst, because S.B 3322 will legitimize "lawsuit lending," which will create "lawsuit loan sharks" who can loan money to lawyers filing suits.
Illinois' challenging employment situation makes this legislation particularly dangerous, since businesses usually look at a state's lawsuit climate when deciding on locating there--or even staying.
Does Illinois need more abandoned factories, such as the many I saw in depressed Rockford last week?
As for lawsuit lending, will lawyers choose to file suits based upon the law, or to enrich the "sharks?"
Will this legislation further empower a group, trial lawyers, which many think already has too much power?
Will suits be filed to enrich lawsuit loan sharks, as opposed to the legal merits of the case?
And finally, does Illinois need another special interest group, in this case, lawsuit lenders?
Sadly, this bill is co-sponsored by Rep. Lou Lang (D-Skokie), who nominally represents me in Springfield.
