Chicago-area Poles mourn fallen leader

While driving around Chicago's northern suburbs today, I saw a couple dozen of Polish car flags topped with black ribbons--to honor death of the death of Polish President Lech Kaczynski, his wife, and many senior Polish leaders in a plane crash near Smolensk, Russia.

The entourage was to attend a 70th anniversary memorial for the estimated 21,000 victims of the Katyn Forest Massacre--they were victims of one of Josef Stalin's many purges.

Since the Communists were removed from power in 1989, Poland has been one of America's most loyal allies; Polish troops participated in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

President Obama offered condolences to the Polish prime minister, but Poland is another ally he has "thrown under the bus." He reneged on a Polish-Czech missile-shield program last year.
