Biden visits state with highest unemployment rate--says stimulus is working there

Michigan's unemployment rate is at 14.6 percent--the highest in the nation. True, it has slipped since September, a month before after I took the Obama stimulus "campaign sign" photograph during my Upper Peninsula trip, but it's believed that the reason for the drop is that some workers have given up looking for a job.

Yes, the bottom of that sign reads "Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor."

But despite Michigan's well-documented troubles, Vice President Joe Biden says "the recovery act is working" in the Great Lakes State.

"Nobody Messes with Joe" was in Saginaw this morning. The Detroit Free Press has more:

In addition to helping the country avoid a depression, Biden said, "The recovery act is working, it's not only helping Saginaw get back on its feet, it's the laying the foundation for long term recovery in the future. It’s taking a while to get out of this ditch, but it’s working. It’s helped in pulling us back from the brink."

Saginaw has an unemployment rate of 14 percent. Of Biden's claim, National Republican Senatorial Committee spokesperson Kirsten Kurkowski told the Free Press that 162,000 jobs have been lost in Michigan since the stimulus bill was enacted.
