Durbin wrong on Senate health bill as a deficit cutter

Sen. Dick Durbin said that establishing Gitmo North in Illinois is "a dream come true."

Courtesy of the Senate Republican Communications Center, here is some more crazy stuff that Durbin emitted:

FACT CHECK: "BIGGEST DEFICIT CUTTER IN HISTORY”

Ten Years Of Taxes With Only Six Years Of Benefits Still Do Not Produce A Third Of The Savings Of The Balanced Budget Act Of 1997

SEN. DICK DURBIN (D-IL): “And The Congressional Budget Office Took A Look At This Bill, Took A Year To Prepare It And Said It Is The Biggest Deficit Cutter In The History Of The United States. Because Over 10 Years, This Bill Alone Will Save The Federal Government $130 Billion…”(Sen. Durbin, Floor Remarks, 12/18/09)

BALANCED BUDGET ACT OF 1997: $423.9 BILLION OVER 10 YEARS

CBO: “Direct Spending And Revenue Effects Of The Balanced Budget Act Of 1997 … Total … Deficit … 1998-2007 … -423.9 [Billion Dollars].” (“Budgetary Implications Of The Balanced Budget Act Of 1997,” Congressional Budget Office)
