Voters in the former Golden State overwhelmingly defeated five of the six budget measures placed before California voters yesterday.

Government unions were involved in the effort to keep government spending as high as Mount Whitney.
Amid it all, money poured into the campaigns. Between Schwarzenegger and the California Teachers Assn.'s fundraising efforts, more than $25 million had been raised by the weekend, and $3 million more had been raised by backers of Proposition 1C, the $5-billion lottery measure. Among the contributions in recent days were $340,000 from the state Democratic Central Committee and $150,000 from SEIU Local 99, the Los Angeles City and County School Employees Union.

In July I'll be visiting California, nominally for a vacation, but I'm calling it a fact-finding tour. First stop? The heart of the lion's den, San Francisco. In preparation, I've picked up a copy of Jack Cashill's "What's the Matter with California?: Cultural Rumbles from the Golden State and Why the Rest of Us Should Be Shaking."
