DPOE HQ, June, 2010 |
In an email to her minions, Toni Gilpin, the executive director of the DPOE, promises Suffredin will explain the "often mysterious" process of drawing new legislative boundaries.
Well, it's really not that mysterious. The new state legislative districts were created by House Speaker Michael Madigan, who is also the chairman of the Illinois Democratic Party, and state Senate President John Cullerton--behind closed doors. And they were drawn to perpetuate Democratic power.
The congressional maps are particularly obscene. Illinois Republicans flipped four seats in November; Madigan and Cullerton are doing their best to flip them back. To protect Democratic incumbents, the Chicago districts spiral out deep into the suburbs. Hispanic residents got screwed over in the process.

Republicans are suing get the congressional map thrown out. Oh, take a look at a portion of that map. The districts aren't "compact," as required by the Illinois Constitution.
The comedy begins at 7:00pm on Wednesday at DPOE headquarters at 821 Chicago Avenue. A $5 donation is requested.
Comedian Paul Rodriquez once quipped, "Sometimes I think war is God's way of teaching us geography." So it is with Illinois' new legislative districts.
Vaya con Dios!
Correction: The meeting is Wednesday, September 14.
