In honor or Memorial Day--and the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country, I'm writing about some of the military monuments I've seen during my travels.
San Francisco's Union Square is now best known for its location at the center of the city's high-end shopping district. It got its name for the many pro-Union rallies held there during the Civil War. But what's pictured is the Dewey Monument, named for Admiral George Dewey's victory at Manila Bay during the Spanish-American War. I took the photograph from the Macy's store across from the square.
As you'll learn in the first related post, San Francisco has since soured on the military.
