Mob banker Giannoulias' not-so-excellent Canadian adventures

Illinois Democratic US Senate candidate Alexi Giannouias, the failed mob banker, sheephishly admitted through a spokesperson that he was in Canada yesterday participating in a Democratic fundraiser at a US trial lawyers convention in Vancouver.

Canada, eh? I don't get it either.

Giannoulias has a rather unpleasant Canadian history. In a kowtow to Big Labor, Alexi favors renegotiating, i.e. weakening, the North American Free Trade Agreement, which would be quite damaging to Illinois business. Canada is Illinois' biggest export market. Illinois' unemployment rate is 10.8 percent, over one percent higher than the national figure. Do Prairie State firms need another reason to lay off workers?

By the way, a weakened NAFTA would hurt Canada too.

Trial lawyers and their many frivolous lawsuits chase businesses, and of course jobs, out of Illinois, the American Tort Reform Association listed Cook County, where Giannoulias lives, as its third ranked "Judicial Hellhole" last year. Madison County, in southern Illinois, made the ATRA's Watch List.

More Canadian bacon: In April Nick Giannias, the owner of the Boston Blackie's restaurant chain, was arrested in Detroit for allededly participating in a check-kiting scheme. The major Giannoulias contributor was apparently attempting to flee to Canada--he was carrying an American and a Greek passport. Giannoulias donated $114,000 in Giannias contritibutions to charity in May.

Vote for Alexi to be Canada's next senator.
