But the worst was yet to come for Alexi: He reported losing $2.7 million in 2009, and filed for a refund to get $25,000 in taxes he paid from his salary as state treasurer--on the Friday before Independence Day. This is rich. The collapse of Broadway Bank cost tax payers millions, yet Giannoulias claims a refund. A campaign spokesperson says he will donate the funds to charity--why not send it the the US Treasury Department's Conscience Fund? Giannoulias favors Pat Quinn's proposed 33 percent state income tax hike--he could instead, if the Consience Fund is not for him, write a $26,000 check to the Illnois Department of Revenue.
If Alexi does donate his refund to charity, he might be eligible for a tax write-off in 2010. Sweet.
The campaign of Kirk's Republican opponent, Mark Kirk summarizes Giannoulias' dump well:
Alexi Giannoulias wants to raise our taxes but doesn't pay any taxes himself. After costing the FDIC $394 million and wiping out $73 million in college savings, Illinois voters can no longer afford Alexi Giannoulias.Illnois voters have the opportunity to dump Giannoulias from public life in November.
Here's your July 4th assignment: Trump the dump and tell everyone you know about Giannoulias' tax refund, his mob loans, and college fund losses.
