Today's Saturday musical selection brings back an old friend, Dave Edmunds. For the second straight year, the Welsh rocker performed on Jools Hollands' New Year's Eve show on British television.
Before going solo, Edmunds was a member of Love Sculpture, and the band enjoyed a UK top 5 hit with its version of Aram Khachaturian's "Sabre Dance."
Like many people in my age group, I was first introduced to "Sabre Dance" by watching plate spinners on television. If you grew up in the Chicago area when I did, you saw plenty of plate spinners on "Bozo's Circus."
As for Khachaturian, like many Stalin-era artists in the Soviet Union, he was celebrated, dencounced, and then rehabilitated after the dictator's death. Still he was lucky. Millions of Khachaturian's lives were extinguished by Stalin--a loss of life to him was probably as tragic as a broken plate.
Enjoy as rock and roll meets classical.
