Although Roberts referred to the Gitmo inmates as "sociopaths and terrorists and killers" at a meeting tonight in the eastern Kansas city, he's concerned not only about what could happen in Fort Leavenworth, but he is worried about the town itself, as the Kansas City Star reports:
Rather, his chief concern is the potential threat from the outside.
Terrorists might well target Leavenworth as a way to retaliate against the U.S., he said.
Gary Lawrence, a 27-year Army veteran, told the crowd that terrorists preferred "soft targets" like schools, churches and shopping centers.
"This is about the safety of our citizens and our people," he said to applause.
Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, who was Kansas' governor until her appointment, voiced her opposition to incarcerating Gitmo terrorists at Fort Leavenworth in January.
