Pro-lifers descending on Notre Dame campus

Notre Dame University should have seen it coming. Pro-life demonstrators descending on its beautiful campus after its administration invited Barack Obama, who is arguably the most pro-abortion president ever, to speak at its 2009 graduation ceremony.

But academics are famous for doing very stupid things.

Notre Dame is not the biggest Catholic university in the nation, but it's the most prestigious.

Obama doesn't give his address until Sunday, but last week, pro-lifers began gathering in South Bend, including Alan Keyes, who was arrested Friday afternoon by campus police.

Andrea Shea King, as is her wont, was ahead of the curve on this story, interviewing the two-time Senate candidate on her Blog Talk Radio show the day before that arrest.

For more on this story, click on Andrea's post about her interview with pro-life activist Randall Terry.

Here is how the South Bend Tribune describes the scene in the northern Indiana city:

Pro-life activists have flooded into town, conducting rallies and petition drives, standing at Notre Dame's main gate holding large photos of aborted babies. Airplanes have been flying above the city towing banners, and trucks are being driven along city streets, showing graphic abortion photos and demanding Notre Dame cancel the president's visit to campus, where 85 percent of undergraduates and 53 percent of faculty identify themselves as Catholic.

Pro-lifers: South Bend is the place to be this week. For more on the upcoming protests, visit Stop Obama at Notre Dame. The site promises a reprise of Keyes' arrest. But for anyone else making the trip, I have one recommendation: Don't get arrested.

Two of my former students, both high-income Doctors and graduates of N.D., will never contribute another dime as Alumni.
How long will it take N.D. to admit inviting this poseur was a stupid mistake?
How long will it take the College to recover?
