The top two candidates, in the quite likely event none of them achieve 50 percent of the vote, square off again in early April. And Lightfoot may not even make the second round.
The bad news for Chicagoans is that the Chicago Teachers Union-endorsed candidate, Brandon Johnson, is to the left of Lightfoot. And Johnson has been polling better of late.
Lightfoot is a mental whack-job. The most recent example is what she said at a campaign event over the weekend in Greater Grand Crossing on the South Side.
And she told voters that a vote for "somebody not named Lightfoot is a vote for Chuy Garcia or Paul Vallas."
"If you want them controlling your fate and your destiny, then stay home," she elaborated. "Then don’t vote."
Now she says that she "misspoke."
If you are not from Chicago, the South Side is predominantly, but not exclusively Black. Garcia is Hispanic and Vallas is white. Clearly, in dog whistle-fashion, Lightfoot was asking voters not to vote for Johnson, who is Black.
Lightfoot of course is playing racial politics. She can't rely on her record, which is horrible. Businesses and residents are fleeing the city, violent crime is way up, and Chicago was hit with two rounds of riots in 2020.
