The Barracudas – Summer Fun

British surf band, yeah, that was a thing--the Barracudas--put out a great song, "Summer Fun," back in 1980. 

The bit with the host botching the group's name, hints at the boisterous intro on the album version of the song, which incorporates a vintage Plymouth Barracuda radio ad, itself a classic.

Summer is almost over--enjoy it now!

 

Chicago Tribune and Sun-Times post rare mugshot pic

The Chicago Tribune has a stated policy of rarely publishing mugshots. 

From that paper in 2021:

Part of this is just plain fairness. A lot of people who are arrested will end up not being convicted. Some will be found not guilty or won’t go to trial at all. Some will plead guilty to lesser charges, even misdemeanors, instead of the ones that put their names in the news. Readers may associate law enforcement booking photos with criminal activity; their use might imply guilt of individuals who are, by law, considered innocent until proven guilty.

The Trib does make a schadenfreude exception, in regard to public officials, or former ones. In this case, Donald J. Trump, who is hardly expected to carjack someone in Chicago. 

Unstated, as far as I can tell, is a similar policy at the Chicago Sun-Times.

Of course, the Trib and the Sun-Times have posted Donald Trump's mugshot.

Tragically, I believe Chicago is awash with career criminals. Yes, I get it and then some, innocent until proven guilty. But many accused criminals are caught while out on bail, on probation, or have prior criminal records. 

Then there is this guy, for whom CWB Chicago has posted this mugshot of a man, who was caught allegedly crawling into a North Side woman's apartment earlier this month. He has been arrested eight times since March. 

What about protecting the public?

Seven killed, including two high school students, and at least 31 others wounded, over weekend in Chicago

Chicago Public Schools have their first day of classes today. Tragically, 14-year-old Rayjohn Harshaw and 17-year-old Ashuntice Wilburn, won't be in attendance. In separate shootings, both were shot to death over the weekend.

Overall, a total of seven people were killed during the weekend in Chicago, and at least 31 others were wounded.

In related news, last week Chicago's new mayor, Brandon Johnson, named his choice for police superintendant, Larry Snelling. The city council needs to ratify this selection. Considering that Johnson prefers a "holistic" approach to crime fighting, rather than a lock-em-all-up strategy, Chicago's violence epidemic will continue.

Robbie Robertson with Van Morrison: I Hear You Paint Houses

As you know, the great Robbie Robertson, the principal songwriter and lead guitarist for The Band, passed away at 80 last week. Robertson befriended Martin Scorsese during the filming of The Last Waltz, he later worked on many soundtracks for later Scorsese movies--including The Irishman, which is about the murder of Teamster boss Jimmy Hoffa. 

The movie is based on a book, I Heard You Paint Houses, which is mob code for murder. Paint meaning blood.

This song, with another good friend of Robertson's, Van Morrison, adding vocals, played during the credits of The Irishman, "I Hear You Paint Houses."

It Makes No Difference - The Band - The Last Waltz

One of rock music's greats, Robbie Robertson, the main songwriter and lead guitarist for The Band, died this week at the age of 80. 

Click, watch, and listen to one of his best ballads, "It Makes No Difference." This performance, with Rick Danko on lead vocals, is beautifully concluded with a touching soprano saxophone solo by Garth Hudson.

This clip is from the Martin Scorsese directed The Last Waltz.

Bob Dylan's 1974 comeback tour--backed up by The Band, kicked off in Chicago

The legendary Robbie Robertson, lead guitarist and principal songwriter for The Band, died today at 80.

Originally a backup band for an Arkansas rockabilly artist, Ronnie Hawkins--he had taken his act to Canada in the late 1950s--The Band, split from Hawkins in 1964. They eventually became the stage band for Bob Dylan.

After a motorcycle accident in 1966, Dylan stopped touring and The Band began writing and performing their own material. First with Music from Big Pink in 1968 and then their self-titled follow-up in 1969, The Band recorded two of rock's greatest albums. Among the memorable songs from those collections are the Robertson-penned "The Weight," "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" and "Up on Cripple Creek." Arguably, the Americana genre of music was created by Robertson and The Band.

Flash forward to 1974: Dylan, with the Band backing him up, released a studio album, Planet Waves, which is best known for the song "Forever Young." To promote the collection, Dylan, with The Band in tow, hit the road--Dylan's first since 1966. But not only was that tour a comeback for Dylan, it was, in spirit, a comeback for The Band too. After those epic first two albums, the next LP effort for them was the uneven Stage Fright in 1970, followed by the abysmal Cahoots the next year. The Band wouldn't release another studio album of original material until 1975--the brilliant Northern Lights-Southern Cross.

The first gig of the Dylan/Band tour was on January 3, 1974--at Chicago Stadium. The Band performed some of their songs from their catalog that night and on the other stops on that tour.

According to Bob Dylan.com, the title track from Stage Fright was one of The Band songs played that evening. What you see below is not from the Chicago concert, but from Martin Scorsese's The Last Waltz, the best rock movie concert movie ever made.

But for you purists, here's a very rough video of that same song from the Chicago gig. What you'll see there, like most cinematic efforts, isn't up to Scorsese's standard.

Six dead and at least 19 others wounded over weekend in Chicago; 8-year-old girl among those slain

While there were no riots--what Mayor Brandon Johnson calls "larger gatherings" over the past weekend, there was of course plenty of violence. August's first weekend saw six people shot and at least 19 others wounded.

Tragically, one of the slain was an eight-year-old girl shot on Saturday night in Portage Park on the Northwest Side.

Nick Lowe - Man That I've Become

For eleven years, Nick Lowe was married to Carlene Carter, who is Johnny Cash's stepdaughter.
