Offices of powerful Chicago alderman raided by feds

Burke
Alderman. Ed Burke (14th) is a poster child for term limits. He succeeded his father who died in office in 1969. For much of his time in office Burke has been chairman of the Finance Committee, which means, of course, Burke's fingerprints are all over Chicago's pension bomb.

Suspicion has surrounded Burke for years. But now the situation has become intriguing. The national media, and to a lesser extent the locals, are trying to tie this development to Burke's legal work for Donald J. Trump.

From the Chicago Sun-Times:
Federal agents showed up unannounced at the City Hall office of Finance Committee Chairman Ed Burke, kicked everyone out and papered over the windows Thursday morning.

The exact nature of their visit was not known, but Ald. Burke (14th) has dodged dozens of federal investigations over five decades in Chicago politics.

A source told the Sun-Times the raids were in response to new allegations, and not prompted by any past controversies that have swirled around Burke. That means, for now, the investigation isn't focused on Burke’s property-tax-appeal work for President Donald Trump, or Burke’s oversight of a city workers’ compensation fund, among other matters.

It doesn’t mean, however, that those dots won’t be connected later.
Later that day the feds visited Burke's Southwest Side ward office.

Even before yesterday's news Burke was facing a tough reelection. His brother, a state representative, was defeated in the Democratic Primary by an Hispanic candidate. Burke's ward, once dominated by working class whites, is now heavily Hispanic.

Lou Dobbs is not happy about GM's plans to close three plants.

Indicted Chicago alderman set to change plea, UPDATED

Is this club of felon Chicago aldermen about to grow by one?

The Chicago Sun-Times is reporting that Ald. Willie Cochran (20th) may change his plea today on various federal charges.
Prosecutors allege the 65-year-old stole money from a charitable fund, spending some of it at casinos and using some for his daughter’s college tuition. They say he demanded cash from an attorney for developers in exchange for taking action in his official capacity.

The 15-count indictment handed down in 2016 includes bribery and wire fraud counts.
Cochran's predecessor, Arenda Troutman, served time in prison for corruption.

Great work, 20th Ward voters.

UPDATE 8:45 PM:

The plea negotiations broke down. There will be a trial for Cochran next summer.

Members of the caravan on Sunday rushed the border at the San Ysidro port of entry, which connects Tijuana, Mexico and San Diego, California.

Nine teachers among 128 Chicago Public Schools employees canned after background checks

Daniel Webster School, West Side

Among the 128 workers were nine teachers, 35 people classified as classroom aides and an unspecified number of people the district lists as substitute or hourly workers, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Another 124 employees remain barred from work because they haven’t submitted fresh fingerprints for an updated background check.

The district’s review, and additional measures to protect students, came after the newspaper reported in June that ineffective background checks sometimes exposed students to educators with criminal convictions and arrests for sex crimes against children.
It is my opinion that CPS should close--fire everyone--and reopen with new administration and teachers.

I heard this story but I feared it was fake news. But yes, Dr. Brenda Snipes, the incompetent Broward County elections supervisor, is checking out.

Chicago hospital carnage: 3 murdered Monday, including Chicago cop

Mercy Hospital has always had a place in my heart. An aunt of mine worked as a nurse there for years. Injured Chicago White Sox players used to be treated at Mercy. And perhaps my favorite story from there was my grandmother who would tell me, repeatedly how she remembered that I visited her at Mercy after her stroke. And  how she watched after I left out of her window as I walked two blocks to my car through a snow covered park.

But yesterday Mercy was a violent place. A psychopath fatally gunned down his former fiancée, emergency room doctor Tamara O'Neal. The gunman also murdered Samuel Jimenez, a Chicago police officer, and a pharmacy technician, Dayna Less.

Please pray for the victims and their loved ones.

Happy 100th Birthday Latvia

There have been Latvians for centuries but an independent Latvia is a relatively recent entity. As the old order in the Old World collapsed after World War I, Latvia declared its independence on this day on 1918.

But in 1940 the Evil Empire, the Soviet Union, seized control of Latvia, as well as Lithuania and Estonia. In 1991 all three broke free, and unlike other former Soviet Republics, they never looked back.

Happy 100th to Mrs. Marathon Pundit's home country.

The Clash - Safe European Home Live

Forty Novembers ago the Clash released their second album--but the first one issued in the United States--Give 'Em Enough Rope.

Here is The Only Band That Matters pounding out the opening track from that effort, "Safe European Home."

On this day in 1978: Star Wars The Holiday Special airs

Star Wars fans--and haters--can look back and laugh when they watch the Star Wars Holiday Special, which aired on this date in 1978.

It's Plan 9 from a galaxy far, far away. It's Battlefield Earth set on Kashyyyk, the planet of Chewbacca and the other Wookiees.

Want is wrong with it? The plot, such as it is, centers on Wookiees' Life Day, their version of Christmas or something like that.. But Wookiees don't talk in the manner humans and most of the other aliens within the Stat Wars universe do. How can anyone devise a story on them?

The main human Star Wars characters, Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Princess Leia, make brief appearances. Art Carney, Harvey Korman, and Bea Arthur, all solid talents, the latter two who were big stars at the time on CBS, which aired this black hole of a show, are in it much longer. Of course they have as much to do with Star Wars as Chewbacca does with opera singing.

Jefferson Starship, a vastly overrated band in my opinion, performs a song so bad you'd wish the Big Bang never happened.

Here is the spaceship wreck in its entirety.

On this day in 1918: Allies occupy Constantinople

For only the second time in the second millennium a foreign army occupied Constantinople, Turkey,  now known as Istanbul. Allied forces, first the French and then the British, occupied what was then the capital of the Ottoman Empire.

The Turks committed horrific crimes during the First World War, most notably, the Armenian Genocide.

Tinley Park, Illinois World War I monument

Last Sunday I ran a 5K race in Tinley Park, Illinois where I came across, next to a baseball field, this World War I monument.

The marker reads, "In remembrance of those from this community who served in the World War, 1917-1918, so that government of the people, by the people, and for the people shall not perish from this earth. Erected 1940 by the American Legion Post 615, Tinley Park, Ill."

Chris Wallace: Jim Acosta 'embarrassed himself,' is a showboat

Don't forget. For six years Chris Wallace was a White House correspondent.

And Wallace is right, Jim Acosta's question for President Trump "seemed to be more than an argument than a question."

Acosta is a showboat, Wallace is correct about that too.

The White House made the right move by yanking his credentials yesterday after Acosta's tantrum.

Mark Dice: Bye Bye Jim Acosta

You need to see the entire exchange, if you can call I that, between CNN's Jim Acosta and President Trump, one that led to Acosta having his White House press credentials pulled.

Trump was right. Acosta was rude, he interrupted another reporter, and Acosta editorialized his questions and he broke a cardinal rule of journalism--not for the first time.

Journalist are supposed to cover the news, not become the news.

Mark Dice has more.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg breaks three ribs in fall, being hospitalized

Let's hope for a speedy recovery for her. This is the second time the justice has broken ribs in a fall.

From AP:
Eighty-five-year-old Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg fractured three ribs in a fall in her office at the court and is in the hospital, the court said Thursday.''

The court's oldest justice fell Wednesday evening, the court said. She called Supreme Court police to take her to George Washington University Hospital in Washington early Thursday after experiencing discomfort overnight, court spokeswoman Kathy Arberg said.

She was admitted to the hospital for treatment and observation after tests showed she fractured three ribs.

In her absence, the court went ahead Thursday with a courtroom ceremony welcoming new Justice Brett Kavanaugh, who joined the court last month. President Donald Trump and new acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker were on hand.

Mark Dice: What Happened?

There was no blue wave. Only a blue ripple. And leftist heart throb Beto O'Rourke dropped an "F bomb" on live TV during his disingenuous concession speech.

Ohio no longer a purple state?

Look for the national media to ignore this story out of Ohio. As goes Ohio, so goes the nation?

From Clevleand.com:
[Mike] DeWine won the governor's race and Republicans ran the table of constitutional offices. They held on to every single congressional seat they currently owned. The GOP maintained their majorities in both chambers of the statehouse.

The statewide elected Democrat is an endangered species in Ohio, which not long ago could boast its reliably swing state status. U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown won his re-election and Michael Donnelly and Melody Stewart will join the Ohio Supreme Court, but outside of those three, marquee success stories were barren.
In that governor's race Obama-leftist Richard Cordray, the former head of Elizabeth Warren's brainless-child, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, was the Democratic nominee.

CNN’s Dana Bash: Dems suffer "big heartbreaks" in midterm guv races

The Democrats lost two key gubernatorial races last night. Republicans held the governor's races in Ohio and Florida, as Dana Bash explains.

November - Tom Waits

November, in the Midwest, is a tough month. Snow is infrequent and when it falls, it generally doesn't stick around long.

It's cold and damp. Rainy cold.

Tom Waits, in his obscure Black Rider album, sings here about the eleventh month in a tune, appropriately enough, "November." This performance is from 2004 and it was recorded in Amsterdam.
November has tied me
To an old dead tree
Get word to April
To rescue me
November's cold chain
Made of wet boots and rain
And shiny black ravens
On chimney smoke lanes
November seems odd
You're my firing squad

Great again: 250K new jobs smashes estimates, wages increase biggest since recession

President Donald Trump did promise to Make American Great Again, did he not?

From CNBC:
Job growth blew past expectations in October and year-over-year wage gains jumped past 3 percent for the first time since the Great Recession, the Labor Department reported Friday.

Nonfarm payrolls powered up by 250,000 for the month, well ahead of Refinitiv estimates of 190,000. The unemployment rate stayed at 3.7 percent, the lowest since December 1969.

The ranks of the employed rose to a fresh record 156.6 million and the employment-to-population ratio increased to 60.6 percent, the highest level since December 2008, according to the department's household survey. That headline jobless number stayed level even amid a two-tenths of a percentage point rise in the labor force participation rate to 62.9 percent.

Those counted as outside the labor force tumbled by 487,000 to 95.9 million.
The annual hike in wages the biggest since 2009.

The midterm elections are Tuesday. The Republicans favor jobs, not mobs.

Chicago anti-violence worker sues employer over harassment allegations

If true, then someone doesn't get the point.

From WGN-TV:
A prominent organization fighting violence on Chicago’s streets is facing allegations of sexual harassment.

In the lawsuit, a worker at Cure Violence claimed she was repeatedly subjected to harassment over the past five years.

Cure Violence uses ex-offenders to go out into the community to prevent violence. One of the organization’s leaders is at the center of the allegations. WGN News is not naming him because he has not been criminally charged with sexual harassment or abuse.

The lawsuit was filed on behalf of a current worker at Cure Violence, but several other women are expected to be added later. Three women spoke at a news conference Wednesday and detailed incidents in which they said they were sexually harassed, even assaulted, and they said they were retailed against when they reported him to human resources.
