Richard J. Oglesby statue in Chicago

Situated on a small hill south of Diversey in Lincoln Park is a statue of Richard J. Oglesby, a three-time Republican Illinois governor, Mexican War officer, Civil War general, and US Senator.

Oglesby, Kentucky-born like Abraham Lincoln, was at the Petersen House when the Great Emancipator died.

It was Oglesby who, during the 1860 presidential campaign, dubbed Lincoln "the Rail Splitter." And it was Lincoln who urged Oglesby to run for governor four years later.

The LaSalle County town of Oglesby is name for him.
